Andin this final letter to Timothy, which Paul wrote near the end of his life, he reinforced the importance of knowing and understanding the whole counsel of God, which is able to make us wise unto salvation through Jesus Christ our Lord. Paul knew how easy it is to slip away from the truth of the literal, historical Word of God into the
Theadjective profitable used in the New King James Version of 2 Timothy 3:16 means “useful or beneficial, promoting or enhancing well-being.” In other words, the Bible is good for us. Paul highlights four main functions of God’s Word: teaching, reproofing (or rebuking), correction, and instruction in righteousness.
Hereis one way to outline Paul’s second letter to Timothy: 1:1-2: Personal greeting. 1:3-5: Thankfulness for Timothy’s faith. 1:6-14: The need for courage and faithfulness. 1:15-18: Commendation of Onesiphorus. 2:1-13: Exhortation to steadfastness (comparisons to soldiers, athletes and farmers).
But in a secondary sense, applied to a war, it meant an internecine war admitting of no truce; and thence, as here, applied to a person, it means "implacable," one who will make no truce or treaty with his enemy. The sense "truce breakers" is not justified by any example. Slanderers (διάβολοι); as 1 Timothy 3:11 and Titus 2:3.
